Take a Girl Child to Work @ Anglo American
May 2011
Four of our girls were chosen to be a part of this initiative with Anglo
American: our 3 matric girls and a grade 9 girl. All of them had a wonderful
time on the day and experienced things that they didn’t think were possible!
Now they know that there are great positions for women in the world out there!
Thank you Anglo American!
Here is an article that gives more information about this initiative:
Anglo American hosts young girl learners
Published on 1 June 2011
"As part of the Cell C Take a Girl Child to Work programme, Anglo
American hosted 40 young girls at the Corporate Office and Spectrem Air. Now in
its eighth year, this social investment programme aims to give young girls the
opportunity to experience first-hand the 'world of work' and access to
information.
"For many girls, the visit to Anglo American marked a turning point in
their lives when they experienced modern day career options available to them.
Armed with a variety of career options to consider, they had the opportunity to
make informed career choices that will shape their future and change their world
for the better.
"The highlight of the day was when the girls visited Anglo American's
Spectrem Air for a full exposure to Airborne Electromagnetic and related
technologies.
2011 Theme: "Today a Girl, Tomorrow a Leader"
"This year's theme is a challenge to young women and girls around South
Africa to believe in themselves, to open their eyes to the possibilities around
them and to make a difference in their own lives. It provides an opportunity for
girl children to consider how the choices they make today will shape their
future careers and change the world for the better. Their visit to Anglo
American gave them exactly that, as it provided an opportunity for the girls to
'stop, think and evaluate' the career choices that they will make with the
information gathered on the day.
"For us as a company, as well as ourselves as role models and caring
citizens, we did not only provide an opportunity for girls to 'stop, think and
evaluate' the career choices, but we made them realise that Anglo American is an
employer of choice for by giving them career advises and bursary forms. We had a
very good response from the girls and parents and hope to see most of them as
our VAC students in the near future.
"The Take a Girl Child to Work Committee would like to thank all
our executive members, guest speakers and staff for their support and belief in
our Take a Girl Child to Work programme. A special thanks also goes to
Spectrem Air staff who hosted our girls at their site."
